Recycling Scrim Material from the RBC Canadian Open

From Tournament to Timeless: Giving RBC Canadian Open Scrim a Second Life

This year, we had the opportunity to work alongside Golf Canada and the Green Event Ninjas on an exciting circular-economy initiative following the RBC Canadian Open. Together, we tackled a major sustainability challenge: hard-to-recycle scrim used as television backdrop material throughout the tournament.

Diverting Hard-to-Recycle Materials from Landfill

Scrim is a durable plastic fabric designed for temporary use—but once events are over, it often ends up in landfill due to limited recycling options. Instead of letting that happen, the material was collected and sent to our facility to be fully reprocessed.

Through our in-house recycling process, we:

  • Melted down all of the recovered scrim material

  • Formed it into solid plastic chunks

  • Shredded and ground it into smaller, usable pieces

  • Reintroduced the material into our manufacturing process

By doing this, we successfully diverted several 40-yard bins of plastic from landfill—over 4,300 lbs of material given a brand-new purpose.

Turning Waste into Durable Plastic Lumber

Once processed, the reclaimed scrim was transformed into high-performance plastic lumber. From what started as white scrim material, we produced red and black recycled plastic boards designed to last decades outdoors without rotting, cracking, or needing maintenance.

Using this lumber, we built a collection of long-lasting outdoor furniture, including:

  • Muskoka chairs

  • Park benches

  • Picnic tables

Each piece showcases how event waste can be reimagined into something both functional and beautiful.

A Sustainable Future for Golf Canada’s New Office

The finished furniture will be installed at Golf Canada’s new office building in Alton, Ontario, where it will be used for years to come starting next summer. It’s a tangible example of how sustainability can go beyond recycling—closing the loop from event → material → product → long-term use.

Collaboration That Makes an Impact

This project wouldn’t have been possible without the shared commitment of Golf Canada, the Green Event Ninjas, and the teams involved in the RBC Canadian Open. Together, we proved that even the most challenging materials can be diverted from landfill when innovation and collaboration come together.

We’re proud to be part of initiatives like this—and we’re just getting started.

Stay tuned for more projects that turn waste into something built to last.
